The computer repairman who exposed the Hunter Biden laptop scandal is taking action against politicians and the media who falsely accused him of being part of a Russian disinformation campaign.
What is the background?
After the New York Post broke the laptop story just weeks before the 2020 presidential election, Democrats and the media worked overtime to dismiss the story as Russian disinformation.
For example, the media peddled a letter from more than 50 former “senior intelligence officials” claiming, without evidence, that the laptop story had “all the classic hallmarks of a Russian information operation.”
Then-Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe was quick to dispute these claims, however, explicitly saying the laptop “was not part of a Russian disinformation campaign”. Still, the media doubted the veracity of the story until news outlets began quietly authenticating the contents of the laptop’s hard drive.
What happens now?
John Paul Mac Isaac, the owner of the Delaware computer store, filed a libel suit on Tuesday against Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California), CNN, Politico and the Daily Beast, the New York Post reported.
Mac Isaac reportedly took possession of the laptop in 2019 after it was dropped off at his repair shop but never picked up. The FBI took possession of the computer in December 2019, but Mac Isaac retained a copy of the hard drive. He then gave a copy to Rudy Giuliani, who provided it to the New York Post.
Mac Isaac sued in Montgomery County, Maryland. His attorney, Brian Della Rocca, told the New York Post that his client was seeking “at least $1 million in compensatory damages.” [and] punitive damages which will be much higher and will be determined at trial.” Mac Isaac was forced to close his business and temporarily relocate after the story broke.
Specifically, Mac Isaac accuses Schiff of sharing “with CNN and his viewers a complete and utter lie” when he told CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer after the laptop story that “all the libel about Joe Biden comes of the Kremlin”.
The lawsuit accuses CNN of broadcasting a “false and defamatory story” which essentially accused Mac Isaac of having “committed an infamous crime, that is, treason by working with the Russians to commit a crime against the United States of America in attempting to undermine United States democracy and the 2020 presidential election.”
Meanwhile, the lawsuit hits the Daily Beast for describing the laptop’s hard drive as ‘stolen’ and targets Politico for the story of former intelligence officials who claimed the laptop was part of a Russian disinformation campaign.
Rocca told the Post that Mac Isaac “has suffered immensely from the misrepresentations disseminated about those who brought the information about Hunter Biden’s laptop to everyone’s attention.
“He lost his business, his friendships and his honorable position in his community. This lawsuit aims to repair a small part of the damage caused by the defendants in the lawsuit,” explained the lawyer. “We intend to show that their actions were intentionally malicious.”
